MANDATORY EVACUATION INFORMATION FOR BATTERY PARK CITY

MANDATORY EVACUATION: IMPORTANT INFO

MANDATORY EVACUATION INFORMATION FOR BATTERY PARK CITY
MANDATORY EVACUATION INFORMATION FOR BATTERY PARK CITY

The Mayor has called a mandatory evacuation of Battery Park City:

1. Evacuation of the neighborhood is mandatory by Saturday, August 27th by 5PM.

2. MTA Public Transportation will be suspended by Saturday, August 27th by Noon.

According to NYC.Gov

Evacuation Centers
In the event of an evacuation order, the City strongly recommends evacuees stay with friends or family outside evacuation zone boundaries. However, for those who have no alternative shelter, the City has identified hurricane shelters throughout the five boroughs.

To ensure the most efficient use of resources and to make necessary parking available, the City will ask all evacuees seeking public shelter to report to an evacuation center. These centers are located in all boroughs, are easily reached via public transportation. Some centers provide parking facilities.

Each evacuation center is associated with several hurricane shelters in what is known as its “solar system.” There are currently 65 such systems in the City, each of which can accommodate an average of 10,000 people.

Evacuation centers help ensure the number of people in each is roughly the same, eliminating potential overcrowding or underuse of particular facilities. At the evacuation center, evacuees will be assigned to a particular evacuation shelter and be transported by bus or van.

To find out the location of your nearest evacuation center, use OEM’s Hurricane Evacuation Zone Finder to locate your evacuation zone, and the system will direct you to the proper facility. During an emergency, you can also obtain this information by calling 311.

Hurricane Shelters

Hurricane shelters provide basic needs for those with no other place to go. Shelters are selected based upon the safety of their location (outside of Category 4 hurricane inundation areas) and proximity to evacuation centers.

Certainly, service animals that assist people with disabilities are allowed in hurricane shelters. Ideally, you should arrange to shelter other pets at a kennel or with friends or relatives outside the evacuation area. Legal pets with proper identification will be admitted into shelters with their owners. Owners should bring cleaning and food supplies with them, as well as containers and leashes.

Officials will notify evacuees when and if it is safe to return to their homes. Since hurricanes are highly destructive, residents may not be able to return home for weeks.

North Cove Marina Hosts Radio-Controlled Sailboats

Remote controlled sailboats sail in the harbor

Just because the warm boating weather is gone and the yachts have migrated South for the cold season doesn’t mean that North Cove Marina has to languish as an unused dead zone in winter! On Saturdays and Sundays, the marina is transformed into a mini race course for 10 radio-controlled Laser sailboats. The marina is open to the public at a cost of $5 per hour, which pays for batteries. A $20 security deposit is required, but then refunded at day’s end. Sessions are determined by demand.

Interested “boaters” are urged to make an advance reservation in order to confirm a boat. If you do not make a reservation, boats will be available to you on standby.

Details are as follows: Upon arrival at North Cove, people should check in at the Dock Master booth, located on Dock H and access an RC Laser from the Laser Guru after filling out a form and submitting a deposit. There is also a Race Guru in charge of competitive boating. Race results will be recorded.

Do you plan to visit the North Cove Marina to operate a radio-controlled boat?

Summers over for millions of kids, but some students in our neighborhood can’t wait to go back to school tomorrow.

P.S./I.S. 276 officially opens their doors today for summer registration but will welcome the first class of students tomorrow into their new school at 55 Battery Place. The school hails as New York City’s greenest school in the five boroughs. Last year, the school housed it’s Kindergarten class in a temporary space at the Tweed Courthouse.

Today summer registration is open and tomorrow marks the first day of classes for all grades, with shorter days for the Kindergarten and Pre-K classes.

P.S./I.S. 276 is located behind the Millenium Tower residences and will have the same green technologies for the school that power the building, including the use of solar panels and filtered air ducts. The building was designed by Dattner Architects.

The school is zoned for students who live south of Albany Street, Liberty and Maiden Lane. The zone initially caused controversy for Gateway Plaza families who wanted to be included in the school zone because of it’s close proximity.

The school year academic calendar for parents is as follows:

September 8 – First day of school/Half day for Kindergarten/Shortened session for Pre-K.
September 9-10 – Rosh Hashanah (No School)
September 13- Half Day for Kindergarten/Shortened Session for Pre-K

Man Paddleboards from Florida to Battery Park City!

Tom Jones paddles into Battery Park City (Credit: New York Daily News)

Tom Jones wanted to do something to raise ocean awareness.
(No, not sing “She’s a Lady,” that’s a whole other Tom Jones)

Tom Jones of Huntington, California wanted to take a 1,500 mile trip along the Atlantic Ocean from Key West, Florida to Battery Park City, New York to raise ocean pollution awareness.

“Going out in the ocean and doing this campaign was a way for me to see how bad the situation was out there, Every day I was in the ocean I would see plastic bottles, food wrappers, all type of trash. It’s incredible given the volume of the ocean,” said Jones to the New York Daily News.

During his journey, Jones encountered sharks, horse flies and an unfortunate circumstance with an alligator after hitting the animal’s leg with his paddleboard.

A crew drove along the coast with Jones, and another colleague floated along with him to pass him food and water.

Jones traveled in 15 miles stretches a day and finally landed in Battery Park City after 90 days of paddleboard travel.

According to his approach to the narrow waterways of New York City, “Coming into New York City, where the waterways are tighter, the plastic is so dense,” he said. “There’s plastic forks, 5-gallon plastic buckets, bags, cups, all of that.”

Welcome to New York buddy!
